Traditional and Hormone-Sparing Sterilization

While often overlooked as routine, or just a necessity, your companion’s sterilization procedure may be one of the biggest medical days of their life. At Flathead Veterinary Wellness & Rehabilitation Center we always strive to provide you with options so you can make the decisions that align with your companion’s health goals. We are now expanding our services to include sterilization for dogs and cats, including gonad-sparing sterilizations, vasectomies and hysterectomies. We offer a basic and holistic surgical package and offer additional treatments to help reduce pain, maximize healing, support organ function, and restore the gut microbiome. All patients must complete an initial holistic consultation. During this consultation, we will perform a full physical examination, a Clinical Animal Nutrition Survey, and get to know each other to assess overall health and provide individual recommendations while deciding on the best sterilization procedure for you and your companion.

Procedure Options

We offer a range of sterilization procedures to meet the needs and goals of each patient and their family:

  • Vasectomy — Interrupts sperm transport while leaving the testicles intact, preserving the hormonal benefits of testosterone.
  • Traditional Spay (Ovariohysterectomy) — Removal of the ovaries and uterus. The most common approach, eliminating heat cycles and reducing certain disease risks.
  • Traditional Neuter (Castration / Gonadectomy) — Removal of the testicles. Standard procedure with a long track record of safety and behavioral benefits.
  • Ovary-Sparing Spay (Hysterectomy) — Removal of the uterus while retaining the ovaries. Eliminates pregnancy and pyometra risk while preserving hormonal function.

Understanding Hormone-Sparing Options

The hormones produced by the ovaries and testicles do more than govern reproduction — they play important roles in musculoskeletal development, metabolism, immune function, and long-term health. For some pets, particularly large and giant breeds, there is growing evidence that early removal of these hormones may influence health outcomes later in life.

Hormone-sparing procedures like the ovary-sparing spay and vasectomy allow pet owners to prevent unwanted litters while preserving the natural hormonal environment. These are not the right choice for every pet or every situation, and we are committed to presenting the options honestly so you can make the most informed decision for your companion.

During your consultation, we will walk through your pet’s individual circumstances, including breed, age, lifestyle, and health history, to help you weigh which approach best fits their needs.
